Sea Otters
Sea Otter populations arc across North Pacific coastlines and islands from Japan to Central California. Feeding on urchins, crabs, mussels and lobsters, these animals are keystone predators that, to a large degree, determine the structure of kelp forests along the central California coastline. Cormorants of California Three species of cormorant fish the coastal waters and inland lakes of California. They all feed by diving from the surface and swimming under water to chase and catch fish. Because their feathers are not strongly oiled, they do not provide the buoyancy of other birds and they are able to remain under water longer and with less effort. After dives, they assume the characteristic cormorant posture of standing with wings outstretched in order to dry their wettable feathers. Members: Click here or image to right | ![]() |
